PTI calls for ex-PM Kakar’s arrest amid wheat crisis

Opposition Leader in the Punjab Assembly, Ahmed Khan Bhachar, has demanded the arrest of former Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar in connection with the wheat crisis gripping the province.

In an interview with Tariq Chaudhry aired with private news channel Bhachar insisted that those responsible for the decision-making in the Economic Coordination Committee meeting should be apprehended first.

Farmers across various regions of Punjab have been staging protests, alleging that the Punjab government and the Agriculture Department failed to ensure the enforcement of the wheat support price in the open market.

Media reports indicate that Punjab accounts for over 75% of the total wheat harvest, yet this year, the market prices plummeted, compelling growers to sell the staple crop well below the government’s set support price.

Bhachar asserted that Kakar’s arrest is crucial, linking the crisis to the previous PML-N government’s policies. He criticized the government’s decision to import 32 tons of wheat despite possessing 40 tons domestically.

Furthermore, he claimed that the government has not presented the procurement policy and criticized the distribution of only six sacks of wheat per acre, labeling it as inadequate.
