PTI selects Sheikh Waqas Akram as nominee for PAC chairmanship

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has made a decision to nominate Sheikh Waqas Akram for the crucial position of chairmanship of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC). PTI spokesperson Rauf Hassan revealed that the official announcement of Akram’s nomination will be made following further consultations with the party’s leadership.

In response to this development, Akram expressed his gratitude on his social media account, acknowledging PTI founder chairman Imran Khan and the party leadership for selecting him based on Khan’s guidance. He remarked on the current political climate, suggesting that the PTI is facing targeting for political retribution. Nonetheless, he asserted his belief that history will remember those who uphold genuine freedom and the rule of law.

It’s worth noting that PTI had previously nominated Sher Afzal Marwat for the PAC chairmanship, and at one point, Sahibzada Hamid Raza of the Sunni Ittehad Council was also considered for the position.

In late April, members of the Sunni Ittehad Council, including Zain Qureshi, Marwat, and Hamid Raza, met with the National Assembly speaker to discuss matters related to the formation of parliamentary committees. Sources revealed that the opposition recommended Hamid Raza for the chairman of PAC to the speaker.

Speaker Ayaz Sadiq assured opposition lawmakers that the selection of office-bearers would adhere to parliamentary rules, stating the importance of resolving issues through mutual understanding among parliamentary committees.

Earlier, PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan had announced on April 30 that Sher Afzal Marwat’s name had been finalized for the position of PAC chairman.
