Punjab Assembly suspends membership of 27 members following SC directive

The Speaker of the Punjab Assembly, acting upon the directives of the Supreme Court, suspended the membership of 27 designated individuals.

This decision was made during a session chaired by Speaker Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan, reducing the total membership in the House to 203 members. Among those suspended, 23 belonged to the Muslim League-N.

The decision also involved revisiting the allocation of reserved seats for women and minorities to the ruling coalition, following an appeal from the Sunni Unity Council to reconsider the distribution of certain seats.

Consequently, 24 female members and 3 minority members were among those suspended, with the majority affiliated with the PML-N. This move resulted in a reduction of 23 votes from the PML-N and 2 votes from the People’s Party in the Punjab Assembly.

Additionally, it’s important to note that the Supreme Court intervened by suspending the Peshawar High Court’s decision on specific seats and scheduling a hearing for the appeal concerning these seats from the Sunni Ittehad Council.
