Qatar contemplates closing Hamas office in country

Qatar is contemplating the closure of Hamas’ political office as part of a broader evaluation of its role in mediating between Israel and the militant Palestinian group. A Qatari official familiar with the government’s reassessment revealed that the decision to allow Hamas to continue operating its political office is under review, alongside Qatar’s involvement in mediation efforts in the ongoing conflict. The reassessment comes amid concerns that Qatar’s mediation efforts are being undermined by political agendas.

The official, speaking anonymously, mentioned that Qatar’s decision on whether to maintain the political office would be influenced by the behavior of both Israel and Hamas during negotiations. Additionally, a report from The Washington Post cited an unnamed U.S. official stating that Washington had advised Qatar to expel Hamas if the group persists in rejecting a ceasefire deal with Israel.

Meanwhile, Hamas negotiators have arrived in Cairo for intensified discussions regarding a potential truce in Gaza, which could involve the return of hostages to Israel, according to a Hamas official speaking to Reuters.
