Record decrease in mobile phone users in Pakistan after 6 years

PS:Business Recorder

In a recent report, it has been revealed that Pakistan experienced a significant decrease in the number of mobile phone users during the year 2023 marking the first decline in six years. According to data from Data and Market Intelligence Platform and UAE’s streaming platform, Bign (begin), cellular subscriptions in Pakistan witnessed a record decrease of 3.7 million during 2023. This decline brings the total number of mobile phone users down to 194.6 million from the previous count of 199 million in 2022.

The annual State of Apps report, compiled by these platforms highlights a 19% decrease in mobile phone users in Pakistan during the specified period. This decline raises questions about the factors contributing to such a significant shift in consumer behaviour.

One possible explanation for this decrease could be attributed to the tightening of budgets among consumers within the telecommunications industry. As the report suggests, telecommunications companies may be targeting cost-conscious consumers with more affordable options leading to a reduction in subscription numbers. Conversely, there may also be a shift in focus towards high-spending consumers as companies aim to maximize revenue from this segment.

Furthermore, advancements in digital communication platforms and the availability of alternative means of communication such as internet-based messaging and Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services could also play a role in reducing reliance on traditional cellular subscriptions. With the increasing popularity and accessibility of internet-based communication tools, consumers may find themselves less dependent on traditional mobile phone services.

Additionally, economic factors such as inflation and fluctuating purchasing power could influence consumer spending patterns impacting their willingness to invest in mobile phone subscriptions. As disposable income levels fluctuate, consumers may prioritize essential expenses over discretionary spending leading to a decrease in mobile phone subscriptions.

The record decrease in mobile phone users in Pakistan during 2023 raises important questions about the evolving dynamics within the telecommunications industry and consumer behaviour. Factors such as cost-consciousness, technological advancements and economic conditions are likely contributing to this shift. Understanding these factors is crucial for stakeholders within the telecommunications sector to adapt their strategies and offerings to meet the changing needs and preferences of consumers in Pakistan.
