Russia conducts military drills with tactical nuclear weapons amid rising tensions

Amid escalating tensions with Western powers, Russia has announced plans to conduct military exercises involving tactical nuclear weapons. This move comes following perceived threats from France, Britain, and the United States, stemming from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Since the invasion, Russia has repeatedly warned of growing nuclear risks, although U.S. officials have not reported any changes in Russia’s nuclear posture. The upcoming drills are designed to prepare and deploy non-strategic nuclear weapons and will involve missile forces, aviation, and the navy.

The decision for these exercises, ordered by President Vladimir Putin, is in response to what Russia sees as provocative statements and threats from Western officials. The drills aim to safeguard Russia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, particularly concerning the ongoing conflict dynamics in Ukraine.

Russia currently possesses around 1,558 non-strategic nuclear warheads, solidifying its status as a major nuclear power alongside the United States and China. Despite assurances from U.S. President Joe Biden that he doesn’t foresee an immediate nuclear threat from Russia, some U.S. officials have conducted contingency planning for potential Russian nuclear strikes against Ukraine.

The Kremlin’s response to Western statements was triggered by remarks from French President Emmanuel Macron, British officials, and a U.S. Senate representative. These comments regarding the conflict in Ukraine have heightened tensions further.

Meanwhile, NATO is conducting its largest military exercise since the Cold War, known as “Steadfast Defender,” although it remains unclear if these drills include any nuclear elements. Western leaders have condemned Russia’s actions in Ukraine as aggressive and have pledged support for Ukraine against Russian forces, setting the stage for continued geopolitical tensions.
