Saudi Arabia cuts cinema licensing fee to boost films

The Saudi Arabian Film Commission has announced a reduction in licensing fees for operating cinemas, which is expected to lead to a significant decrease in cinema ticket prices.

Approved by the Film Commission Board of Directors chaired by Minister of Culture Prince Badr bin Abdullah bin Farhan, this decision aims to stimulate growth, engage audiences, and position Saudi Arabia as a prominent regional filmmaking center.

The commission has streamlined the licensing process and reduced fees for various cinema operations, including permanent, temporary, and special needs cinemas.

Cinema operators are being encouraged to offer discounts and promotions to attract more moviegoers.

This initiative is anticipated to result in an increase in the number of cinema halls, enhance accessibility to Saudi films, and drive more people to cinemas across the Kingdom, according to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).

The commission is committed to enhancing Saudi Arabia’s cinematic landscape, fostering economic growth, and promoting cultural diversity in the industry.

Abdullah Al Qahtani, the CEO of the Film Commission, emphasized that these measures aim to bring Saudi cinema in line with international standards and promote its sustainability and expansion.

Users on social media platforms expressed satisfaction with the decision to support cinema, expand screens, increase economic contributions from companies, and promote film culture in the Kingdom.

One user commented, “This is a positive and fantastic step, and we hope this initiative will encourage Saudi businessmen to invest in the film industry.”

Social media users have also suggested various measures to improve public access to cinemas and enhance their willingness to attend, such as cancelling electronic reservation fees for tickets and reevaluating prices of food and drinks.
