Shehbaz compares AGP’s letter to ‘contempt of court’

Letter sought updated medical reports on condition of former PM Nawaz Sharif

Leader of Opposition in the National Assembly Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday stated that the attorney general of Pakistan’s letter demanding updated reports on former prime minister Nawaz Sharif’s condition was “politically motivated” and was comparable to “contempt of court” since matter was already ongoing in Lahore High Court.

The PML-N leader sent a response to the AGP office regarding the letter which was sent to him on January 24. The response said the letter was issued to support the “dying political rhetoric” of the federal cabinet. It added that the matter was already pending in the Lahore High Court, and hence the letter was comparable to “contempt of court”.

The development comes a day after an updated report on the former PM’s medical condition was submitted to the LHC by Advocate Amjad Pervez. The report said that doctors had advised Nawaz Sharif against travelling back to Pakistan.

The AGP office on January 24 had warned Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Shehbaz Sharif that he could face contempt of court proceedings in the event he did not produce fresh reports on former prime minister Nawaz Sharif’s medical condition.

The letter said that a special medical board had analyzed the report sent by Cardiothoracic Surgeon David R Lawrence. The board had said that the documents did not provide any information about the current clinical evaluation of Nawaz Sharif.

The letter said that the board found that Shehbaz Sharif did not fulfill his duty in providing periodical medical reports from the former PM’s doctor.
