Sonakshi Sinha shuts down critics over cracked ‘Heeramandi’ history

Some cinephiles expressed disappointment with the series ‘Heeramandi’ and directed criticism towards its director, Sanjay Leela Bhansali.

Sonakshi Sinha responded to this backlash in a recent interview with ETimes, clarifying that the series never promised a history lesson.

She explained that while ‘Heeramandi’ drew inspiration from historical places like Lahore’s Heera Mandi, it primarily aimed to create an artistic world for viewers.

Sinha emphasized Bhansali’s expertise in crafting such immersive cinematic experiences.

Regarding the trend of praising international content while criticizing local projects, Sinha suggested that those calling out ‘Heeramandi’ might also enjoy fictionalized shows like ‘Bridgerton.’

She encouraged viewers to approach ‘Heeramandi’ as entertainment rather than realism, highlighting Bhansali’s distinctive style of storytelling.

The series, set against the backdrop of Indian independence, delves into the lives of courtesans in Heera Mandi.

Despite its opulent portrayal, a Pakistani doctor criticized its accuracy, stating that the real Heera Mandi lacked the grandeur depicted in the series, with fancy attire reserved mainly for performances.
