State Bank of Pakistan gets new czar

Former deputy governor of the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), Jameel Ahmad, has been appointed as its governor for five years.

The Finance Division has issued a notification for the appointment of the new governor of SBP. Finance Minister Miftah Ismail has congratulated the newly appointed governor. The previous governor of SBP, Dr Raza Baqir’s three-year term had expired on May 4.

Jameel Ahmad has served as the SBP deputy governor (banking and FMRM) from April 11, 2017 to October 15, 2018. He was reappointed as deputy governor for three years on October 25, 2018.

He has also served at Operations, Banking Policy and Regulations Department, the Development Finance Department and Financial Resource Management Department as group head. Jameel Ahmad also worked at the Saudi Arabian Monetary Agency (SAMA).

Jameel Ahmad has completed important tasks for the banking systems of Pakistan and Saudi Arabia by working to formulate policy and regulatory framework. He has also served as the chairman of steering committees on the implementation of Raast and SBP’s Knowledge Management System. He also worked on Pakistan’s national payment systems strategy that was jointly developed by the SBP and the World Bank.
