The death toll from Turkiye, Syria earthquake rises to 34000

The death toll from the February 6 earthquake in Turkiye and Syria has exceeded 34,000.

According to the foreign news agency, 29,605 people died in Turkey and 4,500 in Syria.

As per Turkish media, a 7-month-old baby was pulled out of the rubble after 140 hours, a 13-year-old girl was pulled out of the rubble after 136 hours, and a 70-year-old Turkish woman was pulled out of the rubble of another building.

Turkiye Ministry of Justice had issued arrest warrants for those involved in poor construction and detained 12 people.

Till now 6,000 buildings had been destroyed in Turkiye due to the earthquake.

The World Health Organization said that 26 million people had been affected in both countries.

The United Nations also expressed concerns that the death toll from the earthquake in Turkiye and Syria may double.

The UN Secretary-General demanded the Security Council to allow the opening of cross-border aid centers between Turkiye and Syria.
