Trend of sugar price increase subsided

Lahore: The ongoing trend of increases in sugar prices has subsided.

According to market sources, sugar prices in retail markets range from 145 to 150 rupees per kilogram while in wholesale markets, a 50-kilogram sack of sugar is being sold for up to 7,000 rupees.

The wholesale price of sugar ranges from 6,000 to 6,700 rupees per sack marking a halt in the trend of price hikes which saw an increase of up to 5 rupees per kilogram over the past week.

Meanwhile, sugar mill owners are requesting permission from the government to import sugar.

Yesterday, a spokesperson for the Sugar Mills Association stated in a press release that the country has a surplus of 1.5 million tons of sugar urging the government to take immediate steps to permit its import without imposing any financial burden.

Furthermore, the spokesperson appealed to Federal Minister for Industries Rana Tanveer Hussain and Federal Minister for Commerce Jam Kamal Khan to consider a reduction in international sugar prices and grant permission for imports accordingly.
