US urges Pakistan to prioritize economic reforms

As Pakistan endeavors to secure a fresh bailout package from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the United States (US) has called upon Pakistan to broaden and prioritize its economic reforms.

State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller stated, “Pakistan has shown progress in stabilizing its economy, and we endorse its efforts to tackle its significant debt burden. We urge the government to prioritize and expand economic reforms to address its economic challenges. Our commitment to Pakistan’s economic success remains steadfast, and we will continue to engage with Pakistan through technical agreements, as well as strengthen our trade and investment ties, all of which are key aspects of our bilateral relationship.”

Regarding comments made by the Indian defense minister, Miller remarked, “The United States will refrain from intervening in this matter, but we encourage both India and Pakistan to refrain from escalation and seek resolution through dialogue.”

Miller also mentioned that the United States will persist in advocating for freedom of expression in Pakistan.

While refraining from commenting on the visit of the Saudi foreign minister to Pakistan, Miller noted that the US Secretary of State had recently conversed with the Saudi FM to discuss de-escalation in the Middle East.

“We continue to collaborate with Saudi Arabia not only to de-escalate immediate tensions but also to work towards long-term and ultimately normalization between Saudi Arabia and Israel, which would foster regional peace and security for years to come,” Miller concluded.
