Imran, Khattak ‘spar over gas crisis’ in PTI’s meeting

Defence minister denies reports of rift with premier

Defence Minister Pervez Khattak said on Thursday that Prime Minister Imran Khan is his “leader” and he has no disagreements with him.

The comments came after reports suggested that the two leaders exchanged harsh words during the PTI’s parliamentary meeting that was called to take the party leadership into confidence regarding the supplementary finance bill. However, according to reports, the situation turned sour as Khattak showed serious reservations over the gas crisis.

“There is no gas in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) despite the province being the producer of gas and electricity,” sources quoted Khattak as having said.

“We have voted for you to become the prime minister, but if your behaviour remains the same, then we will not vote for you the next time,” Khattak warned.

Sources revealed that after listening to Khattak’s remarks, the premier said: “If you are not satisfied with me then, I will hand this government to somebody else.” However, senior party leaders calmed the situation down, sources added. Later on, Khattak clarified that he had “never disagreed with the PM,” adding that they had “only had a discussion related to gas issues.”

“I didn’t say anything along the lines of not voting for PM again,” Khattak said while refuting all rumours about having a forward block in the party.

Reaction to the alleged row, PML-N’s Vice President Maryam Nawaz wrote on Twitter that “this is just the beginning” for the [prime minister].

She said that the treatment of some PTI members towards the premier is “a result of his actions.”
