Over the last four years, 339 gifts worth over Rs200 million were received by Pakistani officials, including President Dr. Arif Alvi and his wife.
According to a report extracted by Zahid Gishkori, 329 foreign gifts were presented to important Pakistani personalities in the last four years.
Important personalities received gifts worth Rs202.2 million. According to the report, most of the gifts were given to the president and his wife. President Alvi received 92 gifts worth Rs4.5 million. Former prime minister Imran Khan and his wife were given 58 gifts.
Earlier, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in a meeting with senior journalists on Friday accused the former prime minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman of selling Toshakhana gifts worth Rs140mn in Dubai. Valuable gifts include diamond jewellery, bracelets and watches. Shehbaz Sharif also said that everything would be according to law in Toshakhana case. He had alleged that Imran Khan had first changed the law of the treasury and then the necklace, ring and watch were bought at a lower price from the treasury and sold in Dubai.
According to Pakistan Ulema Council Chairman Tahir Ashrafi, if an illegal act has taken place then action should be taken. He also urged the authorities to make a law about receiving gifts. He also said that if Imran Khan had done anything against the law and his gifts were taken from the treasury against the law then the government should take action against him.
In response to the story, PTI leader Shahbaz Gill said that Toshakhana was the house of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N). In a tweet, he wrote that all the things had been declared to the tax department. “Imran Khan is not a thief like you,” he said, taking a jibe at the PML-N.
Earlier, PTI member Chaudhry Fawad also commented, asking whether it was a crime to sell the watch Imran had bought from the government. He said he could sell his watch no matter if it was worth Rs50 million or 100 million, “and no one should have any objection”.
