Argentina demands arrest of Iranian minister linked to 1994 bombing, Interpol contacted

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Argentina has called for the arrest of an Iranian minister who is part of the Iranian delegation currently visiting Pakistan.

This demand stems from Argentina’s request to Interpol to apprehend Iran’s interior minister, Ahmed Vahidi, in connection with the 1994 bombing of the Jewish community center in Buenos Aires. According to reports from the Arab news agency Al Arabiya, Argentina has issued a red alert to Interpol for Vahidi’s arrest, highlighting his presence in the Iranian delegation visiting Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

The Argentine Foreign Ministry emphasized the seriousness of the charges against Vahidi, urging both Pakistan and Sri Lanka to assist in his apprehension. The move comes after an Argentine court accused Iran of orchestrating the 1994 attack on the AMIA Jewish Community Center, which claimed the lives of 85 people, along with a separate bomb attack on the Israeli embassy two years earlier that resulted in 29 fatalities.

While no group has claimed responsibility for the 1994 attack, suspicions have long pointed to Hezbollah, allegedly acting at Iran’s behest.

Despite denials of involvement from Tehran, prosecutors have implicated senior Iranian officials in ordering the attacks. Argentina, in its pursuit of justice, seeks the international arrest of those responsible, including Vahidi, who is considered a key figure in the AMIA bombing.

The Argentine Foreign Ministry’s statement underscores the country’s commitment to holding perpetrators of terrorism accountable, particularly in the context of its sizable Jewish community, which is the largest in Latin America, numbering over 300,000 members.
