ASP Shehrbano saves woman from mob in potential ‘blasphemy’ crisis

At almost 1 o’clock on Sunday, a tense incident unfolded at Ichra Bazaar, Lahore, where a woman narrowly escaped a potentially grave accusation of blasphemy, thanks to the swift action of Assistant Superintendent of Police Gullberg (ASP) Syeda Shehrbano Naqvi.

The ordeal began when the woman, whose identity remains undisclosed, was accused of wearing a blasphemous dress by onlookers. The garment in question bore Arabic words, sparking suspicion among some bystanders.

ASP Shehrbano Naqvi and Station House Officer (SHO) Bilal from Ichra immediately intervened and launched a thorough investigation into the matter. Upon closer examination, it was revealed that the accusations stemmed from a misunderstanding.

“It was a confusion,” stated ASP Shehrbano Naqvi.

The woman in question expressed her innocence, explaining that she had unknowingly worn the dress without realizing its content. “I apologize for all that happened, and I’ll make sure it never happens again,” she said. “As a Sunni Muslim, I could never think of doing any such action.”

Additionally, the incident has sparked discussion about the responsibility of the fashion industry to ensure cultural sensitivity. The dress in question, adorned with Arabic letters, inadvertently led to the misunderstanding.
