Celebrating legacy of Madiha Gohar, trailblazer in theatre and activism

The illustrious legacy of Madiha Gohar, a revered figure in the realms of television, stage, and social activism, was commemorated on the anniversary of her passing.

Born on September 21, 1956, in Karachi, Gohar distinguished herself through her impeccable dialogue delivery, nuanced facial expressions, and a captivating portrayal of diverse characters.

Graduating with an MA in English literature from Government College University, Lahore, she further honed her craft with a Master’s degree in Theatre Sciences from the University of London. Embarking on her acting journey in 1973 with PTV, she graced over 100 Urdu and Punjabi dramas with her remarkable talent.

Gohar’s pivotal role in founding the Dramatic Club in 1983 heralded a new era in theatre, particularly through the acclaimed productions of Ajoka Theatre. Her directorial ventures, including “Bulha,” “Dara,” and “Toba Tek Singh,” resonated deeply, championing social change, tolerance, and gender equality.

Throughout her illustrious career, she fearlessly addressed societal issues, leaving an indelible mark on the cultural landscape of Pakistan.

Despite battling cancer in her final years, Gohar’s unwavering spirit and commitment to her craft remained unyielding. Her passing on April 25, 2018, at the age of 62 in Lahore, marked the end of an era, yet her legacy continues to inspire generations, serving as a beacon of hope and resilience in the face of adversity.

Gohar’s contributions were duly recognized with numerous accolades, including the prestigious Fatima Jinnah Award, a testament to her enduring impact on the arts and society at large.
