China warns Blinken over deteriorating ties in talks

China has called on US Secretary of State Antony Blinken to address escalating disagreements, warning of a potential “downward spiral” in relations between the two countries.

As talks commenced in Beijing, Blinken, on his second visit to China within a year, expressed optimism for progress but pledged to address contentious issues head-on, including concerns related to Russia, Taiwan, and trade.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, hosting Blinken at the Diaoyutai state guesthouse in Beijing, acknowledged that while relations between the world’s two largest economies were showing signs of stabilization after a summit between leaders Biden and Xi Jinping in November, there were increasing negative factors at play. Wang said that China’s legitimate development rights were being unfairly curtailed, and its core interests were under pressure.

Wang posed a critical question about whether China and the United States would continue moving forward in a stable manner or revert to a downward spiral. He underscored the significance of sincerity and capability in navigating this crucial juncture.

Blinken, in line with his aides’ earlier statements, assured that he would address a range of concerns during the discussions, including China’s support for Russia, particularly concerning its military presence following the invasion of Ukraine.

Blinken stressed the need for clarity and directness in discussing areas of difference to prevent misunderstandings and miscalculations, stressing the shared responsibility of both countries not only for their citizens but also for global stability.
