Emmys 2026: Widow’s Bay dominates as The Pitt wins again

“Widow’s Bay” emerged as the biggest winner at this year’s Emmy Awards, taking home a record 14 trophies, including the prestigious award for outstanding comedy series. Meanwhile, medical drama “The Pitt” secured another major victory by winning outstanding drama series for the second consecutive year.

The 2026 Emmy Awards brought together some of television’s biggest stars for a night of celebration in Los Angeles. The ceremony also highlighted major acting achievements, emotional tributes and several memorable moments from the entertainment industry.

Apple TV’s “Widow’s Bay,” a horror comedy centred on a cursed New England town, defeated the final season of “Hacks” to claim the top comedy prize. The show had already collected several technical awards earlier in the month, bringing its total number of wins to 14 and setting a new record for the most Emmys won by a comedy in a single season.

The success of “Widow’s Bay” was also reflected in its acting categories. Welsh actor Matthew Rhys won outstanding lead actor in a comedy for his performance as a small-town mayor. He also won the award for outstanding lead actor in a limited or anthology series for Netflix’s psychological thriller “The Beast in Me.”

Rhys became the first performer to win two lead acting awards at the same Emmy ceremony. Speaking to reporters backstage, the actor said he was still struggling to believe what had happened.

Rhys also celebrated his Welsh roots after receiving the two awards. He said he was pleased to have the opportunity to represent Wales on such a major international stage, describing his achievement as a proud moment for a small country.

Another major acting milestone came from Jean Smart, who won her fifth Emmy for playing determined stand-up comedian Deborah Vance in “Hacks.”

Smart’s latest victory made her the first performer to win the Emmy for outstanding comedy actress in every season of the same show. Her achievement places her among the most successful comedy performers in Emmy history.

While accepting the award, Smart reflected on her journey with “Hacks” and thanked the show’s creators and those who had supported her throughout its run.

“The Pitt” also celebrated another major victory as Noah Wyle won his second consecutive Emmy for his role as Dr. Robby Robinavitch. The HBO Max medical drama follows doctors and medical staff working inside a busy trauma centre in Pittsburgh.

Wyle described the win as overwhelming and said being part of Hollywood had always been a dream for him. He thanked the Television Academy for recognising his performance and expressed his appreciation for being welcomed into what he described as the club he had always wanted to join.

“Widow’s Bay” collected several other major awards during the ceremony. Stephen Root surprised many viewers by defeating Harrison Ford of “Shrinking” to win outstanding supporting actor in a comedy. The series also received awards for supporting actress, directing and writing.

Apple TV had another successful moment when Rhea Seehorn won outstanding lead actress in a drama for her performance in “Pluribus.” The actress plays a woman struggling against an unusually kind alien hive mind.

During her acceptance speech, Seehorn referenced feminist activist Gloria Steinem and shared a message about supporting women rather than competing against them. She said women should feel connected rather than ranked against one another.

The limited-series category was won by HBO Max’s murder mystery “DTF St. Louis,” adding another major award to the night’s list of television successes.

“The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” which ended its run after CBS cancelled the programme, won outstanding variety series. The victory gave the long-running late-night show recognition during its final year on television.

The ceremony also featured an emotional tribute to Michael J. Fox for his humanitarian work and advocacy for Parkinson’s disease research and treatment.

Fox, who has lived with Parkinson’s disease since his diagnosis, appeared on stage in a wheelchair and spoke about the support he had received from Hollywood throughout his career. He thanked the industry for standing by him and helping him continue working after his diagnosis.

The Emmy ceremony took place as Hollywood continues to deal with production cuts, concerns surrounding artificial intelligence and uncertainty surrounding major industry business deals. Despite those challenges, most winners avoided controversial subjects in their speeches and focused instead on thanking their families, colleagues and fellow performers.

Mariska Hargitay hosted the ceremony, breaking from the traditional choice of a comedian as host. Known for playing Olivia Benson on “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” Hargitay brought humour to the event while acknowledging the pressure of hosting television’s biggest awards night.

One pre-recorded sketch featured Hargitay’s character investigating whether Taylor Swift would attend the ceremony. Swift, who received an Emmy nomination for a concert film, made a surprise appearance as a rookie detective.

The sketch eventually revealed that Swift was expected to be in Kansas City supporting her husband, Travis Kelce, during Monday Night Football.

With major wins for “Widow’s Bay,” “The Pitt,” “Hacks” and “Pluribus,” the 2026 Emmy Awards delivered a night filled with record-breaking achievements, emotional moments and memorable performances.
