Floods wash away M-5 motorway near Jalalpur Pirwala

A section of the Multan-Sukkur M-5 motorway near Jalalpur Pirwala was washed away by floodwaters, authorities confirmed. The motorway has been closed to traffic for safety reasons.

Officials said the damage occurred at a breach on Uch Sharif road. The National Highway Authority (NHA) attempted to repair the affected motorway bridge. However, strong flood currents forced workers to halt the operation.

Water pressure on the embankment protecting Jalalpur city is gradually decreasing. Authorities said this has reduced the immediate threat to the city. Meanwhile, as the waters of the Chenab River recede, submerged areas in Shujaabad are beginning to dry.

Dozens of settlements near the breach on Uch Sharif road have been affected. Local authorities and rescue teams are working to protect residents and their property. Emergency relief operations are ongoing in the most severely impacted areas.

Officials have warned that floodwaters remain unpredictable. They urged people to stay away from affected roads and bridges. Residents in low-lying areas have been advised to move to safer locations until the situation stabilizes.

Earlier, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif conducted an aerial survey of flood-affected areas in Multan. Her flight also covered Jalalpur Pirwala, where floodwaters continue to disrupt lives and livelihoods.

After the survey, the Chief Minister visited a relief camp in Jalalpur Pirwala. She met families displaced by the disaster and assured them of government assistance. She also inspected the ongoing rescue and relief operations at the camp.

Despite continuous relief efforts, the flood situation in Punjab remains critical. In Kamalia, tragedy struck after a breach developed on Chichawatni Road. An 18-year-old youth, Muzammil, slipped into the breach. Another young man, Shehbaz, leapt in to rescue him but both were swept away by the powerful current.
