iPhone 18 Pro vs 17 Pro: What really changed?

Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro brings several notable upgrades over the iPhone 17 Pro, particularly in camera technology, processing power and battery performance. However, the two flagship models remain closely matched in terms of overall design and display.

The iPhone 18 Pro continues with the aluminium unibody construction and Ceramic Shield 2 protection introduced with its predecessor. It also retains the large rear camera module seen on the iPhone 17 Pro.

Both smartphones feature a 6.3-inch OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate. They also offer similar resolution and brightness specifications, meaning users may notice fewer differences on the front of the devices.

One of the more visible changes is the smaller Dynamic Island on the iPhone 18 Pro. Apple has also introduced new colour options, including burgundy and glacier blue, while removing the cosmic orange finish that was offered with the iPhone 17 Pro.

The biggest upgrade comes in the camera department. Both models use 48MP main, ultrawide and telephoto cameras, but the iPhone 18 Pro introduces Apple’s first variable-aperture main camera.

The new system gives users four aperture settings, providing greater flexibility when shooting in low-light conditions and controlling depth of field. Apple has also expanded its professional camera controls, allowing users to manually adjust settings such as aperture, shutter speed and white balance.

Performance has received another major boost. The iPhone 18 Pro is equipped with Apple’s new A20 Pro chip, replacing the A19 Pro found in the previous model.

Apple’s latest flagship is reported to deliver up to 40% faster graphics performance. An improved cooling system is also designed to help the device sustain demanding performance for longer periods.

Battery endurance has improved as well. The iPhone 17 Pro offers up to 31 hours of video playback, while the iPhone 18 Pro increases that figure to as much as 34 hours.

The price difference, however, is significant. The iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199, making it more than $100 more expensive than the launch price of the iPhone 17 Pro.

For buyers looking for the latest technology, the iPhone 18 Pro offers meaningful improvements, particularly in photography, performance and battery life. However, those seeking better value may find the previous-generation iPhone 17 Pro more attractive if it becomes available at discounted prices.
