Iraq executes 11 individuals convicted of ‘terrorism’, say security and health sources

Iraqi authorities carried out the execution of 11 individuals convicted of “terrorism” this week, according to security and health sources on Wednesday. Amnesty International strongly criticized the lack of transparency surrounding these executions.

Under Iraqi law, crimes such as terrorism and murder are punishable by death, which requires presidential approval for execution. A security source disclosed that 11 individuals affiliated with the Daesh group were hanged at a prison in Nasiriyah, under the supervision of the Justice Ministry.

A local medical source confirmed that the health department received the bodies of the executed individuals, all from Salahaddin province. Seven bodies were returned to their families.

Despite criticism of rushed trials and allegations of confessions obtained through torture, Iraqi courts have imposed numerous death sentences in recent years for affiliation with terrorist groups, regardless of active involvement in combat.

Amnesty International condemned the recent hangings, noting that the charges were overly vague and broad. While 11 individuals were linked to Daesh, the other two had been convicted of terrorism-related offenses following an unfair trial, based on their lawyer’s account.
