In a groundbreaking medical achievement, Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC), Karachi has successfully performed its first knee replacement surgery on a cancer patient — completely free of cost.
According to hospital sources, the 4-hour-long procedure was carried out on a 26-year-old patient who was diagnosed with cancer in the knee and lower leg. The young man has now been given a new lease on life after receiving a high-grade artificial knee implant worth over PKR 1 million (10 to 11 lakh), provided entirely free of charge.
Dr. Farukh, who led the surgical team, confirmed this was the first time in JPMC’s history that a cancer-affected knee joint was removed and replaced with an artificial implant. He stated that the surgery was a complete success, and the patient’s post-operative tests showed no remaining signs of cancer in the body.
The complex procedure involved a multidisciplinary team of medical professionals including Dr. Farukh, Dr. Muzaffar, Dr. Wali, Dr. Shahid, and Dr. Khushhaal. The plastic surgery team was led by Dr. Agha Waseem and included Dr. Mehak, Dr. Komal, and Dr. Farooq.
Dr. Farukh explained that the artificial knee used in this surgery is internationally recognized for its durability and can last between 20 to 25 years. He further emphasized the significance of such advancements in public healthcare, especially in a government-run hospital where cost is a major barrier for most patients.
This milestone surgery highlights the growing capabilities of public healthcare institutions in Pakistan and represents a ray of hope for underprivileged patients suffering from complex diseases like cancer.
