Kaleidoscopic Karachi brings fashion and nostalgia together

Fashion went beyond clothing and trends at the Laam Fashion Week Presents Kaleidoscopic Karachi event, which brought together the city’s fashion community at the Indus Valley School of Art & Architecture in Clifton.

The event created a strong feeling of nostalgia, especially for those who grew up during the 1980s, 1990s and early 2000s. A major highlight was an exhibition featuring more than four decades of fashion photography by celebrated photographer Tapu Javeri.

The photographs took visitors back to an era when fashion magazines were filled with striking images of leading models, actors and celebrities. Many of the faces featured in those photographs later became major names in Pakistan’s fashion industry and continued to influence the fashion scene over the years.

Kaleidoscopic Karachi also marked an important gathering for the fashion fraternity after a long gap. Designers, models, artists, supporters, patrons and philanthropists came together and filled the front rows around the runway. The atmosphere was filled with excitement as familiar faces reunited and celebrated the return of a major fashion event to Karachi.

The evening featured several prominent Karachi-based fashion houses, including Sana Safinaz, Deepak Perwani, Khaadi, The Pink Tree Company and Wardha Saleem. Each designer presented a collection that reflected a distinct creative identity while offering a different view of Karachi’s fashion culture.

Deepak Perwani opened the show with a monochrome collection featuring dramatic cuts, structured silhouettes and detailed embellishments. The designer also brought former fashion models Seemi Pasha, Frieha Altaf and Atiya Khan to the runway, creating a memorable moment that connected the past with the present.

Khaadi presented a bold and experimental collection that focused on prints, embellished tunics and contemporary designs. The collection reflected a futuristic approach to fashion and pushed traditional ideas beyond familiar boundaries. Its strong visual style offered a glimpse into how fashion in Karachi could continue to evolve.

Wardha Saleem took the audience in a different direction by drawing inspiration from the city’s historic architecture and old streets. Her collection transformed elements of Karachi’s past into clothing, combining traditional references with modern fashion. The presentation was further enhanced by the popular “Bandar Road Se Keamari” anthem, which added a strong sense of local identity to the show.

The Pink Tree Company presented an elaborate collection featuring gota work and gold block prints. The designs offered plenty of inspiration for the upcoming wedding season, combining traditional detailing with a festive appeal. The collection was supported by carefully planned hair and makeup styling, while the overall show featured coordinated choreography.

Sana Safinaz once again focused on sophistication, elegance and classic glamour. Their collection reflected an appreciation for old-school style while maintaining a modern sense of luxury. The designs captured the charm of festive couture and wedding wear, offering a polished take on timeless fashion.

Beyond the clothes, Kaleidoscopic Karachi celebrated the city’s fashion history and its changing identity. The event connected established names from the past with newer creative ideas, creating a space where nostalgia and innovation could exist together.

With its mix of photography, fashion and familiar personalities, the event served as a reminder of Karachi’s long-standing influence on Pakistan’s fashion industry. It also showed that the city’s fashion community continues to have a strong creative spirit and an appetite for new ideas.
