Kite flying ban: LHC serves notices to Punjab govt, IG

The Lahore High Court (LHC) issued notices to the Punjab government, Inspector General (IG) of Punjab, and the home secretary on Tuesday in response to a petition seeking a complete ban on kite flying throughout the province.

Justice Ahmed Nadeem Arshad presided over the plea filed by Azhar Siddique, an advocate.

The petition highlighted the tragic incidents caused by stray chemical strings of kites, resulting in multiple fatalities across Punjab. It criticized the perceived failure of the police and relevant authorities to protect lives and enforce a ban on kite flying.

The petitioner urged the high court to instruct authorities to enact legislation ensuring a comprehensive ban on kite flying.

Following the initial hearing, the court served notices to the Punjab government and other concerned parties, seeking their responses to the petition.

In a related development earlier this month, a resolution was presented to the Punjab Assembly proposing to classify kite and string-making as non-bailable offences.

The resolution, put forth by Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) MPA Hina Parvez Butt, expressed alarm over the rising incidents of stray kite strings in the province.

Butt’s resolution urged the Punjab Assembly to categorize kite and string-making as non-bailable offences and urged judges to refrain from granting bail to individuals charged under these offences.
