KP government purchases 50 more buses for Peshawar BRT

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has purchased 50 additional buses for the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system in Peshawar at a cost of Rs2.139 billion.

Peshawar: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has purchased 50 additional buses for the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system in Peshawar at a cost of Rs2.139 billion.

Of the 50 new buses purchased by the provincial government, another 27 buses will arrive in Peshawar in the next phase. Two of these buses have reportedly been provided by the company as complimentary units.

The number of BRT buses has increased from 244 to 269 while the total fleet will reach 296 once all the newly purchased buses arrive.

According to TransPeshawar five of the existing 244 BRT buses will be allocated for women. Details regarding the routes of these pink buses are also expected to be finalized soon.

TransPeshawar said it had recommended that the provincial government purchase 100 additional buses to address the shortage in the BRT fleet. The recommendation included 50 diesel-hybrid buses and 50 electric buses.

Following approval from the provincial cabinet 50 diesel-hybrid buses were to be purchased in the first phase, while another 50 electric buses would be purchased in the second phase.

According to TransPeshawar, the total estimated cost of purchasing the buses was Rs3.2 billion.
