Lahore High Court voids PML-N candidate’s victory in NA-81

The Lahore High Court has invalidated the success notification of PML-N MNA from NA-81, Gujranwala following a appeal from the rival PTI candidate.

Justice Shahid Karim of the high court granted the appeal of filed by PTI candidate Bilal Ijaz against the decision of the election commission.

The court questioned the election commission’s disregard for the Supreme Court’s decision, suggesting that it may amount to contempt of court. It also raised concerns about the election commission’s intervention after the completion of the election process.

In his petition, PTI candidate Bilal Ijaz claimed to have won the February 08 election with a lead of over 7,000 votes.

However, a recounting resulted in PML-N candidate Azhar Qayyum Nahra being declared the winner with a margin of 3,100 votes. Bilal Ijaz argued that over 10,000 of his votes were discarded during the recounting process and stated that the election commission’s decision to order a recount after the formation of the tribunal was not valid.

The petitioner requested the court to declare the election commission’s recounting order null and void.
