Message to NAB

The Supreme Court of Pakistan’s decision on Thursday to declare the arrest of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) Chairman, Imran Khan, in the Al-Qadir Trust case as “unlawful” will go long way in the judicial history. The verdict is a right message to the National Accountability Bureau’s (NAB’s) high handedness. The court instructed Khan to appear before the Islamabad High Court on Friday and be kept at the Police Lines Guest House with proper security. Khan’s lawyer, Babar Awan, had filed a petition challenging his arrest, arguing that he was denied due process of law. The court’s decision is considered a major victory for Khan and his party, while it is a setback for the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), which had arrested Khan on corruption charges.

Khan has been leading a campaign against the government as well as the institutions, accusing it of being corrupt and illegitimate. The government, in turn, has accused Khan of trying to overthrow it through a coup. This political crisis in Pakistan is far from over, and the SC’s decision is likely to further fuel tensions. However, the SC’s decision is also a reminder that no one, not even the powerful NAB, is above the law.

It is crucial for all parties to exercise restraint in this tense situation in Pakistan. Khan should take remedial action and urge his supporters to remain peaceful. Instead of trying to evade justice, Khan should face the cases against him in court. It is hoped that the SC’s decision will help defuse the crisis and be a step in the right direction.

The political climate in Pakistan has been tumultuous in recent years, with corruption allegations and accusations of illegitimacy flying back and forth between different factions. However, it is imperative that the rule of law be upheld and that those who violate it be held accountable, regardless of their status or affiliations. The SC’s decision in this case is an important reaffirmation of this principle.

Moving forward, it is essential that all parties work together towards finding a peaceful resolution to the current crisis. It is also crucial that the media report the events in an objective and impartial manner and avoid inflaming tensions further. Only by working together and upholding the rule of law can Pakistan move towards a more stable and prosperous future.
