Pakistan head coach Mike Hesson believes the national team has not yet delivered its best performance in the ongoing tournament and is hopeful that the players will rise to the occasion in Saturday’s final against Sri Lanka.
Speaking exclusively to Geo News Hesson said Pakistan would face Sri Lanka at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium, having secured their place in the final with three consecutive victories.
The coach described the team’s winning run as encouraging particularly because the results had come without outstanding contributions from some of the key players. He added that Pakistan’s overall performance over the past two weeks had been satisfactory.
Hesson pointed out that Pakistan’s top three batting positions feature two of the country’s greatest batters highlighting the importance of experienced players delivering in high-pressure matches.
According to the head coach winning games without major contributions from the top order was a positive sign. However, he said the final would provide an ideal opportunity for the leading batters to produce match-winning innings.
He also praised Salman Ali Agha for his exceptional performances in the middle order and noted that Hassan Nawaz had shown consistent improvement with the bat.
Discussing Pakistan’s bowling attack Hesson stressed the importance of captain Shaheen Shah Afridi taking early wickets. He also acknowledged the contributions of Naseem Shah and Haris Rauf, saying both fast bowlers had performed well during the tournament.
The coach further expressed satisfaction with the progress of young cricketer Arafat Minhas, saying his performances were improving.
Reflecting on Pakistan’s most recent league-stage encounter against Sri Lanka Hesson admitted that the batting display had fallen short of expectations. Nevertheless he expressed confidence that the team would respond strongly in the final.
Hesson also thanked cricket fans for their tremendous support throughout the series particularly those in Lahore and Rawalpindi. He said the team hoped to reward the supporters by producing its best cricket in the title clash.
With Pakistan seeking to finish the tournament on a high note Hesson’s comments underline his belief that the team still has another level to reach when it matters most.
