Pakistan introduces first AI guidelines for newsrooms

Guidelines for the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Pakistani newsrooms were introduced at a journalists summit. Organized by Media Matters for Democracy, the summit brought together media experts to establish ethical standards for AI usage in journalism.

This initiative marks the first collaborative effort to create responsible AI guidelines for Pakistani newsrooms. The three-day summit focused on the role of AI in journalism and was held in collaboration with the Department of Media and Development Communication, University of the Punjab with support from the European Union in Pakistan and UNESCO.

These guidelines for responsible AI use in journalism were developed in consultation with senior professionals from the media industry. Their aim is to strengthen transparency and accountability and help newsrooms maintain the core values of journalism.

According to Asad Baig, founder of Media Matters for Democracy, these guidelines and principles will provide direction for integrating AI in newsrooms and help enhance journalistic processes. He emphasized that connecting these guidelines to practical newsroom experiences is crucial.

Faculty members and students from the Department of Media and Development Communication actively participated in discussions, workshops and dialogues focused on AI integration in newsrooms.

The department chairperson, Dr. Ayesha Ashfaq stated that media students will play a key role in shaping the future of journalism in Pakistan. Therefore, it is important to provide them opportunities to engage in critical dialogues about AI. She added that the discussions and training activities at the summit are expected to help students better define their professional paths.

Media Matters for Democracy plans to launch an industry consultation process in early 2026 to ensure the practical implementation of these AI guidelines in Pakistani newsrooms.
