Pakistan- Iran lasting friendship

The recently concluded visit of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi to Pakistan marks a significant milestone in the ongoing narrative of collaboration between two nations bound by history, culture, and shared aspirations. When we put light on eight pivotal agreements and memorandums of understanding spanning a spectrum of crucial domains, it seems the stage is set for a new chapter of enduring friendship and mutual prosperity between Pakistan and Iran.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and President Raisi talk of improving the trade volume between the two countries to a staggering $10 billion over the next five years. This target not only reflects a tangible economic impetus but also serves as a beacon of hope amidst the economic challenges faced by Pakistan.

Though the two nations share lasting friendship, the specter of terrorism, particularly along the Pakistan-Iran joint border, has long loomed as a formidable challenge. However, showing a display of solidarity and resolve, both nations have pledged concerted efforts to combat terrorism. The pledge to control the movement of elements and proscribe terrorist organisations requires a collective determination to safeguard peace and stability in the region.

Before leaving the country, both heads of the state addressed a joint press conference, where President Raisi praised Pakistan’s esteemed position on the Israel war on Palestine. Denouncing Israel’s egregious violations against Palestinian Muslims, President Raisi pledged the unwavering support of Iran for the Palestinian cause, buoyed by the belief in their eventual triumph. Prime Minister Sharif also called for concerted action within the Muslim Ummah to address the injustices perpetrated against the Kashmiri populace and their quest for self-determination. President Raisi also called for a joint struggle against terrorism as a cornerstone of collaboration.

Sadly, the Iran-Pakistan Gas Pipeline could not become a talking point in the final statement, which shows that Pakistan is under the influence of international pressure. Also, proposals for the establishment of markets at border crossings further underscore the commitment to harnessing the economic potential latent within their shared frontier.
