ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has taken a major step toward increasing domestic oil and gas production after the Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) signed an agreement with US-based energy technology company Baker Hughes.
Under the agreement Baker Hughes will work to optimize and restore production from OGDCL’s mature assets. The initiative is part of OGDCL’s broader production optimization campaign, which focuses on improving output from existing fields rather than relying solely on new discoveries.
The OGDCL spokesperson said the company has 18 major mature assets comprising 12 oil fields and six gas and condensate fields.
OGDCL currently produces around 40,000 barrels of crude oil per day, along with approximately 815 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD) of gas and 780 metric tonnes of LPG.
The company expects the collaboration with Baker Hughes to help unlock additional production potential from its existing assets by deploying modern technologies and specialized technical capabilities.
The agreement is being viewed as an important development for Pakistan’s energy sector, particularly as the country continues to seek ways to strengthen domestic energy supplies and reduce dependence on imported fuels.
The OGDCL spokesperson described the agreement as a significant step toward strengthening Pakistan’s energy security and increasing local oil and gas production.
US Chargé d’Affaires Natalie A. Baker also welcomed the agreement describing the partnership between OGDCL and Baker Hughes as an important milestone in the Pakistan-US energy partnership.
The collaboration could provide OGDCL with access to advanced production optimization technologies while supporting efforts to improve recovery from mature fields.
Pakistan has been working to enhance domestic energy production and make better use of its existing oil and gas resources. Improving output from mature fields can help increase local supplies while potentially supporting the country’s broader energy security objectives.
The latest agreement between OGDCL and Baker Hughes is therefore expected to play a role in the company’s efforts to optimize its existing portfolio and increase oil, gas and LPG production in the coming period.
