Pakistan sends first batch of Indian wheat to Afghanistan: MOFA

Foreign Ministry said 41 Afghan trucks sent to Afghanistan via Torkham border

Pakistan transported the first batch of Indian wheat and medicines to Afghanistan via the Torkham border in order to assist in the provision of humanitarian aid to Afghanistan.

In a statement on Wednesday, the Foreign Ministry said that the aid was supplied through the first batch of 41 Afghan trucks. Pakistani authorities had rejected to use Indian trucks for transportation of supplies and instead used Afghan trucks which entered Pakistan from the Torkham border.

The issue of supplying 50,000 tonnes of wheat and lifesaving medications was agreed upon recently with Pakistan coordinating with both India and Afghanistan. The foreign ministry said that the Pakistani government allowed overland transportation of humanitarian assistance under special circumstances.

The aid has been allowed to go from India to Afghanistan to help the war-torn country fight its ongoing crisis, it added.

The statement said that Pakistan has been in close coordination with both countries in order to smoothly organize transit of the supplies. It added that the move must not be taken as a precedent to send items from India to Afghanistan as these supplies were only sent because of the humanitarian crisis.
