Prime minister’s appointment power transferred to lower officials

The power to create certain government appointments has shifted from the prime minister to other officials. This change, approved by the Federal Cabinet, moves the authority to ministers, ministers of state, and secretaries.

Previously, this power was solely in the hands of former prime minister Imran Khan. With the Cabinet’s approval of new recommendations, the responsibility for creating and approving appointments is now shared among ministers, advisers, ministers of state, and secretaries.

Government sources stated that the goal is to bring more skilled professionals into ministries and divisions. The Ministry of Finance, in partnership with the Establishment Division, will lead the creation of these new posts. The hiring process will be competitive and overseen by a special selection board.

Consultants will need approval from the respective minister, minister of state, or adviser. Similarly, secretaries will be responsible for endorsing the hiring of research associates and young professionals.

However, technical advisors can only be appointed with the prime minister’s approval.

This restructuring aims to bring more expertise and efficiency to government operations, focusing on a merit-based system for appointments. The goal is to create a more effective administrative structure, leading to better governance and improved public services.
