Punjab expands electric bus network to tehsil level

LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has approved a major expansion of the province’s electric bus service, with plans to extend the facility to tehsils across Punjab.

Chairing a meeting in Lahore, the chief minister announced that the expanded service will begin from January next year. Under the plan, around 1,500 electric buses will be deployed at the tehsil level to improve public transport facilities for residents outside major cities.

The meeting was informed that the provincial government is working to significantly increase the number of electric buses operating across Punjab. The target is to have 3,000 electric buses in service throughout the province by June next year.

The expansion is aimed at providing modern, affordable and environmentally friendly transportation to a larger section of the population. Extending the network to tehsils is expected to improve connectivity for people living in smaller urban centres and surrounding areas.

The shift towards electric buses is also part of efforts to promote cleaner public transport and reduce dependence on conventional fuel-powered vehicles. The initiative could help lower transport-related emissions while providing commuters with a more modern travel option.

The provincial government is focusing on expanding the service beyond major urban centres so that residents in smaller towns can also benefit from improved public transportation.
