Punjab opposition takes govt to task on inflation

Hamza consults economy experts to prepare speech to target government on deplorable economic conditions in provincial legislature

Punjab Assembly opposition is all set to stage a strong protest in the House against inflation in today’s session.

The session was summoned by Speaker Pervaiz Elahi on the requisition of the opposition. A strategy was devised by the main opposition party, PML-N, on Monday to give tough time to the government during the session. It was decided in the meeting that PML-N MPAs will participate in the session wearing black armbands in protest against inflation. As per the sources, leader of the opposition, Hamza Shehbaz, will also participate in the session and has prepared his talking points to give a hard-hitting speech.

“Hamza Shehbaz has consulted economy experts to prepare his speech that he will deliver in the House while targeting the poor economic policies of the government,” said PML-N insiders. He will talk about inflation and recent increase in petroleum prices that has hit the common man particularly hard.

“It is the representative house of 120 million people and therefore we wanted to raise their issues here,” said MPA Samiullah Khan, the signatory of the requisition. He was of the view that people are suffering from inflation, hunger and dengue and therefore opposition leader Hamza Shehbaz wanted to discuss all these issues in the House. “Yes, his speech is ready and he will deliver it in the House,” he confirmed while talking to MinuteMirror.

It is worth mentioning here that MPA Nishat Khan Daha from PP-206 Khanewal just passed away a couple of days ago and it is a tradition of the house that the first sitting after the demise of any MPA is postponed for the next day after condolences.

“Yes, we are aware of this development and the decision to postpone the house for next day entirely lies with the Speaker as it is his prerogative, but the opposition leader is ready to deliver his speech whenever given the floor,” said Samiullah Khan. It has been decided that we’ll record our protest in the house, Samiullah said, who is also the member of Business Advisory Committee of Punjab Assembly.

MPA Pir Ashraf Rasool, another signatory of the requisition, stated to Minute Mirror that the situation of law and order was also deteriorating and it would also be raised in the house.
