CPPA seeks another electricity tariff hike

The Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) has requested a Rs2.94 per unit increase in electricity tariffs for March 2024, as per the monthly fuel charge adjustment (FCA).

Consumers are anticipated to face another substantial rise in electricity prices in the near future. CPPA has filed a petition with the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) seeking approval for the proposed Rs2.94 per unit hike in electricity tariffs for March FCA.

If approved by NEPRA, this increase would result in an additional financial burden of Rs22.80 billion on power consumers.

According to CPPA, over 7 billion units of electricity were sold to consumers in March 2024, and the recent hike includes adjustments totaling over Rs7 billion.

In February, NEPRA announced a significant increase of Rs7.5 per unit in electricity prices as part of the fuel price adjustment (FCA). This increase was approved for the January 2024 period, with the impact reflected in March 2024 electricity bills.

This tariff hike imposed an additional burden of Rs66 billion on consumers already struggling with high power costs.
