Respiratory illnesses plague those affected by floods in Sindh

Thousands of people from flood-affected districts in Sindh have shown up at medical camps in the past 24 hours, raising concerns about disease outbreaks in the province, where another 11-month-old baby died from respiratory failure.

Approximately 71,398 persons were registered by the provincial health department as having attended treatment at the different medical camps set up across the province, with problems primarily related to waters that have stagnated in the wake of the floods.

According to official statistics from the Sindh health department, 13,989 out of the thousands of patients who were treated had severe respiratory infections.

A total of 12,777 individuals reported experiencing diarrhoea, 13,672 had skin conditions, 8,515 had malaria suspicions, of which 415 were verified, and 33 had dengue. Another 22,413 people had various illnesses.

Since July 1, about three million displaced individuals have gotten care overall.

Numerous people have been forced to flee their homes due to floods in Sindh, where mountainous torrents from Balochistan and floodwaters coming from the country’s north have combined to cause a health disaster.

Separately, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said that 10 flood-related deaths had been recorded nationwide over the previous day, bringing the total number of deaths reported overall since mid-June to 1,606.

According to the National Flood Response and Coordination Centre (NFRCC), the places most severely impacted by the floods were Qambar Shahdad Kot, Jacobabad, Thatta, Khairpur, Dadu, Larkana, Noshero Feroz, and Badin.

The authority said that the Pakistan Army was conducting rescue operations in each of these locations.
