SC asked JIT to submit report on Jaranwala incident

The Supreme Court ordered a report from the joint investigation team (JIT) set up to look into the devastation of 80 Christian houses and 19 churches in the Jaranwala neighborhood of the Faisalabad district last month.

The chairman of the Auqaf, the secretary of religious affairs, the attorney general of Pakistan, and the advocate general were also served notices by a three-judge panel under the direction of Justice Ijazul Ahsan, requesting their responses.

The court stated that the state should ensure the security of the Sikh community and other religious minorities in accordance with the safeguards guaranteed to them in the Constitution.

The court was informed by the petitioner, Sardar Bishan Singh, that the Sikh youth were worried they were going to be murdered.

He asked the court to issue a directive to the Auqaf department to erect four walls around the gurdwaras to keep off invading forces.

According to Singh, these organizations invaded places of worship whenever they pleased without making a distinction between them and other buildings of worship such as mosques, gurdwaras, or temples.

The Sikh leader also provided the SC with information on the details of the damage of gurdwaras in Lahore during the hearing.

The SC was also informed that, in accordance with a deal with a right-wing party, patrols were being conducted in minority areas to see whether anyone was using blasphemy.

The petitioner asked the SC to issue a mandate for the pertinent authorities to present this agreement in court.

In response, the SC commanded the interior secretary and the concerned police chiefs to provide the court with a report on the situation.
