Scottish actor Robbie Coltrane ‘Hagrid’ from Harry Potter dies aged 72

Scottish actor Robbie Coltrane, who performed the character of Hagrid in the Harry Potter movies, passed away on Friday at the age of 72.

In a statement, his agent, Belinda Wright confirmed the actor’s death in a hospital close to Falkirk, Scotland.

In addition to calling Coltrane a special talent, she said that his portrayal of Hagrid gave delight to children and adults alike all around the world.

Robbie Coltrane also co-starred with Pierce Brosnan as a former KGB agent turned Russian mafia lord in two James Bond movies, Goldeneye (1995) and The World Is Not Enough (1999).

He appeared on television in 1987’s cult BAFTA-winning BBC miniseries Tutti Frutti alongside Emma Thompson.

His role as the hard-partying criminal psychologist Dr. Eddie “Fitz” Fitzgerald in the ITV series Cracker brought him fame and additional honours (1993-2006).

Alongside Mr. Bean actor Rowan Atkinson and Hugh Laurie, he played the English author and lexicographer Samuel Johnson in the television comedy series Blackadder the Third (House).

Coltrane appeared in the 1990 comedy Nuns on the Run alongside former Monty Python actor Eric Idle, as well as in the 1987 Neil Jordan crime drama Mona Lisa.

However, he will be most known to the world as Rubeus Hagrid, the half-giant, half-human gamekeeper and Keeper of the Keys and Grounds of Hogwarts School in the Harry Potter movie series.
