Sindh CM forms team to probe custodial death

Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has formed a two-member team to probe the custodial death of one Bhagchand Meghwar, who was found dead in the lock-up of Mithi Police Station some weeks back.

The two-member team will be headed by SSP Badin Shahnawz Chachar while DSP Siraj Lashari would assist him in the fresh inquiry into the alleged killing. The relatives of the victim had expressed their no-confidence in the inquiry conducted by Tharparkar police and had alleged that SSP Hassan Sardar Niazi was trying to save the main accused – PPP’s Samtra Manjani and SHO Mithi Police Station, Mohammad Soomar Mangri.

The committee, which was formed on the directions of PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and comprised PPP leaders, includes Dr. Khatu Mal Jewan, Gayanchand Tharani, Comrade Nandlal Malhi, Shushil Malani and others. The PPP leaders had met the relatives of the alleged victims who had requested them to get the case investigated by police officials of good repute.

They had also said that the main accused, Samtra Manji, the district president of PPP Tharparkar chapter, by using her political influence, had pressured the doctors, who prepared a wrong autopsy report. Taking advantage of the post-mortem report, both the main accused had already got bails from courts. They had alleged that their relative, who was implicated on the charges of theft was first tortured at the residence of Manjani and then was subjected to inhumane torture at the police lock-up. When contacted, SSP Badin, Shahnawaz Chachar said that they would try their level best to investigate the case without any fear or favour.
