Steve Smith axed as Australia name T20 World Cup 2024 squad

As Australia announced their squad for the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, former captain Steve Smith and emerging talent Jake Fraser-McGurk were notably absent from the lineup.

All-rounder Mitchell Marsh has been appointed as the captain, while seasoned opener David Warner is set to participate in what could potentially be his final international tournament.

According to Cricket Australia chair Mike Baird, Marsh’s leadership qualities and consistent performance within the team played a significant role in his selection.

Key players such as Test skipper Pat Cummins, fast bowler Mitchell Starc, and dynamic all-rounder Glenn Maxwell are among the experienced members in the 15-man squad, with eleven players having been part of the victorious 2021 T20 World Cup campaign.

Selector George Bailey revealed that there were extensive discussions regarding the inclusion of Steve Smith, considering his recent dip in limited-overs form.

Additionally, Bailey mentioned the promising form of 22-year-old Fraser-McGurk, who has been showcasing his batting prowess for the Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League.

Bailey emphasized that the final squad composition aimed to provide the best chance of success in the upcoming tournament.
