Thatta’s Hindus demand protection against land mafia

Leaders of the local Hindu community of Mirpur Sakro taluka of district Thatta have accused influential land grabbers of illegally occupying the agricultural survey land they had purchased.

During a press conference at a local press club on Saturday, Walji Mal Maheshwari, Punnuh Mal Maheshwari, Ashok Kumar Maheshwari and others said that a 10-acre land in taluka Mirpursakro was jointly owned by them, but two weeks back over a dozen armed men intruded on their land and tried to forcibly dispossess them.

Walji Mal said that since that incident, the land grabbers were not allowing their farmers to cultivate the land and had erected barriers on the path leading to their agricultural land.

“They have threatened us of dire consequences in case of any legal action against them,” said Ashok Kumar. He added that the local mukhtiyarkar has also verified their land and directed the local police to retrieve the land from illegal occupation, but police seem apathetic towards the issue. Punnuh Mal, for his part, said that this land was the mainstay of their livelihood, but the invasion of the land mafia had deprived them of their source of livelihood. He further said that everyone must be equal in the eyes of law. They urged the Pakistan Hindu Council, IG Sindh, Sindh High Court’s chief justice, and the chief minister for their intervention in the matter.
