UN to issue $2.8 billion emergency appeal for Gaza and West Bank

The UN has announced a global appeal for $2.8 billion to aid the Gaza Strip and occupied West Bank, citing the struggle faced by 2 million survivors in Gaza on a daily basis. The head of the UN’s Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in the occupied Palestinian territory, Andrea De Domenico, stated the urgent need for aid to tackle displacement and famine in the region.

De Domenico stated that 90% of the aid will go to Gaza, with the appeal aiming to support the 3 million people in the West Bank and Gaza. He noted challenges in aid distribution due to limited capabilities and ongoing access barriers. The destruction caused by recent attacks in Khan Younis, including on schools and hospitals, was also highlighted as a major concern.

In the occupied West Bank, de Domenico reported a significant increase in attacks by illegal settlers, with Israeli forces either protecting or directly supporting these actions. The UN official stated the importance of education and the need for peace-building efforts in the region.

Overall, the appeal aims to address the urgent humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the occupied West Bank and provide support to those in need.
