US State dept seeks answers from Israel on Gaza child’s death

The US State Department plans to seek additional information from Israel regarding the January death of 6-year-old Palestinian Hind Rajab in Gaza, according to spokesperson Matthew Miller.

This move comes after a Washington Post report raised doubts about Israel’s initial explanation, prompting calls for a thorough investigation into the incident. The report revealed that Hind Rajab, trapped in a car with her deceased family, pleaded for help during a phone call as gunfire could be heard in the background, indicating Israeli forces nearby.

Twelve days later, her body was discovered alongside her aunt, uncle, and their three children, near an ambulance and two dead ambulance workers who had attempted to rescue them. Contrary to Israeli Defense Forces’ claims, the investigation found Israeli armored vehicles in the vicinity, prompting further scrutiny. Miller stated the need for a comprehensive inquiry into the tragedy, stating it should never have occurred.

The US is urging Israel to provide additional details on the matter, as part of efforts to ensure compliance with international humanitarian law and prevent civilian harm in conflicts.
