World Hemophilia Day, raising awareness about blood disorders

Today, Pakistan joins the global community in observing World Hemophilia Day shedding light on hemophilia and other bleeding disorders. Celebrated annually on April 17th, World Hemophilia Day aims to increase awareness about this condition and the challenges faced by individuals living with it.

Hemophilia is a rare blood disorder characterized by the body’s inability to clot blood properly resulting in excessive bleeding even from minor injuries. It is often an inherited condition caused by a deficiency in clotting proteins in the blood. People with hemophilia may experience spontaneous bleeding or prolonged bleeding after injuries which can be life-threatening if not managed properly.

According to conservative estimates, Pakistan has over 10,000 children affected by hemophilia. However, due to the lack of comprehensive government registration programs, the exact number of affected individuals across the country remains unknown. This lack of accurate data makes it challenging to provide adequate care and support to those living with hemophilia.

World Hemophilia Day serves as a reminder of the importance of early diagnosis, access to treatment and ongoing support for individuals with bleeding disorders. Through education and advocacy efforts, we can work towards improving the quality of life for those affected by hemophilia and promoting greater understanding and acceptance within society.
