Adeel Husain Opens Up About His Long Screen Break

Pakistani actor Adeel Husain has opened up about his long break from acting, explaining why he stepped away from the screen and how the experience changed his approach to choosing projects.

Husain remained away from the media spotlight for an extended period, but his absence was not accidental. The actor revealed that he consciously decided to slow down his career and focus more on his personal life. Instead of appearing in several projects at once, he wanted to work on fewer dramas and give himself enough time to find stories that genuinely interested him.

Husain had a busy run of work around 2016, following several notable television appearances and films. However, the constant cycle of shooting, promotions and public appearances eventually left him exhausted. After completing and promoting two films, he realised that he needed a break.

“I had a long stretch of doing a lot of work. Then my two films were released, I promoted them and I was exhausted,” he said.

The actor was also entering an important phase of his personal life. He revealed that he had met someone special around 2013 and 2014 and was in a relationship at the time. This encouraged him to take a step back and spend more time focusing on himself and his personal priorities.

As his career became more selective, Husain continued searching for meaningful scripts. He wanted to work on a quality drama once a year instead of constantly remaining visible on television.

He later took another year off in 2017. Although audiences felt that he had disappeared for much longer, Husain explained that the gap seemed bigger because of the difference between film promotions and television projects.

“I took a year off in 2017 and people were like, ‘He’s been gone for years,’” he recalled.

For Husain, stepping away was also about finding a better purpose for fame. He believed that popularity should allow an actor to access better opportunities and create more meaningful work rather than simply staying in the public eye.

At the time, he was also in his mid-30s and wanted to experience life outside the constant demands of acting. Although he enjoyed being on set, he felt that there was more to life than continuously working.

Despite his absence, Husain’s fans continued to ask about his return. He said their reaction was flattering and appreciated the support they continued to show him.

Adeel Husain Returns With Doctor Bahu

Husain eventually returned to television with Doctor Bahu, where he plays Dr Faizan, a character dealing with personal, emotional and marital conflicts.

The drama also brought him back together with director Mehreen Jabbar, with whom he had previously worked on Jackson Heights and Dobara Phir Se. Husain said he was excited to collaborate with her again and felt that their creative chemistry remained strong.

His interest in Dr Faizan came largely from the character’s complexity. Faizan is involved in a troubled marriage and struggles with emotional distance and infidelity. Rather than portraying him as simply a bad husband, Husain wanted to understand him as a flawed human being.

He admitted that the character initially made him uncertain, but that feeling eventually attracted him to the role. For Husain, being slightly afraid of a character is often a sign that the role has something valuable to explore.

Mehreen Jabbar also helped him understand Faizan from a more human perspective. She encouraged him to portray him as a man who still loved his wife but had reached a difficult stage in his life.

The complicated family dynamics surrounding Faizan also gave Husain another layer to explore. He gradually began viewing the character as someone living under the influence of a controlling family environment while failing to give his marriage the attention it deserved.

Why Complicated Roles Attract Him

Husain said he has always been more interested in characters with complex motivations than conventional heroes. While playing a traditional hero can be rewarding, he finds morally complicated personalities far more exciting.

He believes that acting becomes interesting when a character is not simply good or bad. Working with talented actors and directors also plays an important role in bringing such performances to life.

Looking back at his career, Husain considers himself fortunate to have worked with performers who gave their best and helped elevate his own performances.

His Other Career Dreams

Acting was not always Husain’s dream career. As a child, he wanted to become an astronaut. He also developed a strong interest in animation, Japanese animation and visual arts.

He believes that if he had not become an actor, he might have pursued animation direction. Becoming a sportsman or pilot were also among the careers he once imagined.

His long break ultimately gave him the freedom to step away from the expectations surrounding an actor’s life. Rather than chasing constant visibility, Husain chose to wait for roles that challenged him—and Doctor Bahu appears to have given him exactly that opportunity.
