Federal Minister for Planning Ahsan Iqbal has raised concerns over open smoking inside the Parliament House, saying it exposes non-smoking lawmakers to the harmful effects of tobacco.
Speaking in the National Assembly, Iqbal questioned why members who do not smoke should suffer the consequences of others’ smoking.
“Smoking takes place openly inside our Parliament House, affecting other lawmakers as well. What fault is it of those who do not smoke?” he asked.
MNA Naeema Kishwar also voiced concern, saying cigarette smoke creates difficulties for women offering prayers inside the building. She said the smoke makes breathing uncomfortable during prayers.
Responding to the complaints, National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq said smoking was already prohibited in public places and that a designated area had been allocated for smokers inside Parliament.
He directed the relevant authorities to ensure that lawmakers smoke only in the designated area and do not violate the restrictions elsewhere in the building.
