In a significant development, Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi clinched victory in the election for the presidency of the Pakistan Tennis Federation (PTF), on Saturday at the PTF headquarters in Islamabad. He defeated his opponent Major General (retd) Asghar Nawaz by a narrow margin of 8-7.
Lt Col Ziauddin Tufail was also elected as secretary, while Arif Qureshi assumed the position of treasurer. Notably, Asghar Nawaz had received six nominations before the elections, while Aisam Ul Haq Qureshi accumulated a total of five nominations.
This historic win makes Aisam the first active tennis player to hold the presidency of the federation. He will serve a four-year term, succeeding Salim Saifullah Khan in the role.
Aisam’s candidacy was supported by various units including the Army, Navy, KPK Tennis Association, International Lawn Tennis Club of Pakistan, and Pakistan Air Force, who nominated him for President.
It is pertinent to mention that Aisam-ul-Haq, who began his career in 1995, is the only Pakistani tennis player to reach a Grand Slam final.
